The Antarctic field notebooks contain the geological observations recorded by Bureau of Mineral Resources geologists during their trips to Antarctica. These csv files are the copies of the transcriptions made on the DigiVol transcription platform with the TEI tags removed. Please see the README file for full details. Also see HPRM8/TRIM folder A17/764 for full documentation about the project. These are the csv files that are used in the Biodiversity Heritage Library copy of the notebooks.

This flythrough illustrates the geomorphic features imaged during a multibeam sonar survey (GA-0348) of the coastal waters around Casey station and the adjacent Windmill Islands. The survey utilised GA’s Kongsberg EM3002D multibeam echosounder, motion reference unit and C-Nav differential GPS system mounted on the Australian Antarctic Division’s (AAD) science workboat the Howard Burton. The survey was a collaborative project between GA, the AAD and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). During the survey a total of ~27.3 km2 of multibeam bathymetry, backscatter and water-column data were collected. The new high-resolution bathymetric grid (1 m resolution) reveals seafloor features in the Casey area in unprecedented detail.

Geoscience Australia conducted a hydrographic and seafloor characterisation survey nearshore from Davis Station in the Australian Antarctic Territory. The multibeam bathymetry data was acquired during January-February 2017 from the AAD workboat Howard Burton in the Vestfold Hills region. This survey is a component of the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) and Project 5093 Hydrographic Surveying and Seafloor Characterisation Program (Chief Investigator: Ursula Harris, AAD). The objective of the survey was to map the seabed environment in shallow (<300 m) coastal waters for the compilation of nautical charts and acquire baseline data for environmental management, science, infrastructure and logistical operations. Data collected during the survey includes high-resolution multibeam bathymetry, backscatter, sediment samples, seafloor imagery and sub-bottom profiles. This dataset is a 32bit geotiff at 11 m resolution using EGM2008 vertical datum and EPSG:4326 coordinate system and produced from the processed EM3002D/ EM2040C Dual system bathymetry data. This dataset is published with the permission of the CEO, Geoscience Australia. Not to be used for navigational purposes.

This is a compilation of bathymetry surveys GA-4415 and GA-0348. GA-4415 survey was conducted by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) onboard the RAN vessel Wyatt Earp in 2013/2014, while GA-0348 survey was a collaboration between Geoscience Australia (GA) , the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Antarctic Division acquired by the AAD workboat Howard Burton during December 2014 to February 2015. The survey goal was to acquire high resolution bathymetry data to improve our understanding of the seafloor using multibeam sonar. The bathymetry data collection will be supplemented by physical sampling of the seafloor sediments and video recordings of the biological communities living in the seafloor. The survey covers areas that are frequently used by the RSV Aurora Australis. Improving our understanding of the seabed environment in these shallow coastal waters will ultimately lead to a better environmental management of the Australian Antarctic Territory. The data will also help the RAN to develop more accurate navigation charts therefore reducing the risk to maritime operation in the region. This dataset is not to be used for navigational purposes.
