Fourteen Australian magnetic repeat stations were occupied during1993 and 1994. The secular variation and geomagnetic field data from the repeat stations will be used for the 1995.0 Australian Geomagnetic Reference Field (AGRF) model, and for global magnetic field models. The repeat stations occupied were at Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, Maryborough, Hobart, Flinders Island, Parafield, Toolangi,Tibooburra, Gove, Weipa, Mt Isa, Eucla, Carnegie and Derby. The magnetic field was monitored by a three component fluxgate variometer and a total field magnetometer, and the data recorded asone minute means onto a portable computer. The recordings were calibrated to magnetic observatory standard.

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation flew an airborne geophysical survey of 67,570 line kilometres over the entire Medusa Banks 1:250 000 map sheet area and the western two-thirds of the Port Keats 1:250 000 map sheet areas from July to September 1994. The survey was flown along east-west flight lines spaced 500 metres apart at a nominal terrain clearance of 100 metres. The total magnetic intensity, gamma-ray spectrometric and digital elevation model data which were collected during the survey, have been processed and are available for purchase, in both digital (point located data and gridded) and map form, from the Australian Geological Survey Organisation. Colour and greyscale pixel image maps are also available.

During 2000 the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (now Geoscience Australia) operated geomagnetic observatories at Alice Springs and Kakadu in the Northern Territory, Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, Charters Towers in Queensland, Gnangara and Learmonth in Western Australia, Macquarie Island, Tasmania, in the sub-Antarctic, and Mawson in the Australian Antarctic Territory. Magnetic recording also took place at the stations of Casey and Davis in the Australian Antarctic Territory. This report describes instrumentation and activities, and presents monthly and annual mean magnetic values, plots of hourly mean magnetic values and K indices at the magnetic observatories and repeat stations operated by Geoscience Australia during calendar year 2000.

This record describes a detailed ground magnetic survey made by the Bureau of Mineral Resources ever part of the area of the Savage River iron deposits. The purpose of the survey was to delineate more accurately the magnetic anomalies revealed by the previous surveys and hence to assist the Tasmanian Department of Mines in selecting drilling sites.
