  • The R502 series of maps has been replaced by the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS). The R502 series consists of 542 map sheets and covers Australia at a scale of 1:250,000. It was compiled from aerial photography, but only about one quarter of the series was contoured. The standard sheet size is 1 degree of latitude by 1.5 degrees of longitude. Transverse Mercator map projection and Clark 1858 datum were used. Coverage of the country was completed in 1968.

  • At this scale 1cm on the map represents 1km on the ground. Each map covers a minimum area of 0.5 degrees longitude by 0.5 degrees latitude or about 54 kilometres by 54 kilometres. The contour interval is 20 metres.

  • This is part of a series of 49 maps covering the whole of Australia and forms part of the International Map of the World map series. At this scale 1 centimetre on the map represents 10 kilometres on the ground. Each map covers an area of six degrees of longitude and four degrees of latitude. The maps show roads, railways, hydrography, larger nature conservation reserves, outback homesteads. Seabed and land relief is shown by layer tints, spot heights and contours in metres. Contour interval is 500 metres, with an additional contour at 200 metres. Product Specifications Coverage: Whole of Australia covered with 49 maps. National coverage first completed in 1975. Currency: Ranges from 1971 to 1983. Average 1976. Coordinates: Geographical. Datum: AGD66 (GDA94 compliant at this scale); AHD. Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic. Medium: Paper map, flat and folded. Status: These maps are no longer maintained. It is planned to produce a new series of maps from the converted 42 World Aeronautical Charts (WAC) series of maps produced in 2006. These maps are only available as a print on demand product. This map can be purchased in either flat or folded format.

Currency: Ranges from 1968 to 2006. Coordinates: Geographical and UTM. Datum: AGD66, new edition WGS84; AHD. Projection: Universal Transverse Mercator UTM. Medium: Paper, flat copies only.

  • Geoscience Australia`s involvement in Papua New Guinea mapping includes managing the production of maps for select urban areas as part of a MOU between Department of Defence and PNG. In addition, Geoscience Australia distributes some (now aging) 1:100,000 scale maps produced by the Department of Defence for much of Papua New Guinea. At this scale 1cm on the map represents 1km on the ground. Each map covers a minimum area of 0.5 degrees longitude by 0.5 degrees latitude or about 54 kilometres by 54 kilometres. The contour interval is 20 metres. Many maps are supplemented by hill shading.

  • This map is part of the series that covers the whole of Australia at a scale of 1:250 000 (1cm on a map represents 2.5 km on the ground) and comprises 513 maps. This is the largest scale at which published topographic maps cover the entire continent. Each standard map covers an area of 1.5 degrees longitude by 1 degree latitude or about 150 kilometres from east to west and 110 kilometres from north to south. There are about 50 special maps in the series and these maps cover a non-standard area. Typically, where a map produced on standard sheet lines is largely ocean it is combined with its landward neighbour. These maps contain natural and constructed features including road and rail infrastructure, vegetation, hydrography, contours (interval 50m), localities and some administrative boundaries. The topographic map and data index shows coverage of the sheets. Product Specifications Coverage: The series covers the whole of Australia with 513 maps. Currency: Ranges from 1995 to 2009. 95% of maps have a reliability date of 1994 or later. Coordinates: Geographical and either AMG or MGA (post-1993) Datum: AGD66, GDA94, AHD. Projection: Universal Traverse Mercator (UTM) Medium: Paper, flat and folded copies.
