  • This web service delivers metadata for onshore active and passive seismic surveys conducted across the Australian continent by Geoscience Australia and its collaborative partners. For active seismic this metadata includes survey header data, line location and positional information, and the energy source type and parameters used to acquire the seismic line data. For passive seismic this metadata includes information about station name and location, start and end dates, operators and instruments. The metadata are maintained in Geoscience Australia's onshore active seismic and passive seismic database, which is being added to as new surveys are undertaken. Links to datasets, reports and other publications for the seismic surveys are provided in the metadata.

  • <div>The Vlaming Sub-Basin CO2 Storage Potential Study data package includes the datasets associated with the study in the Vlaming Sub-basin, located within the southern Perth Basin about 30 km west of Perth. The data in this data package supports the results of the Geoscience Australia Record 2015/009 and appendices. The study provides an evaluation of the CO2 geological storage potential of the Vlaming Sub-basin and was part of the Australian Government's National Low Emission Coal Initiative.</div>

  • This preliminary report will provide a geochemical and ionic characterisation of groundwater, to determine baseline conditions and, if possible, to distinguish between different aquifers in the Laura basin. The groundwater quality data will be compared against the water quality guidelines for aquatic ecosystem protection, drinking water use, primary industries, use by industry, recreation and aesthetics, and cultural and spiritual values to assess the environmental values of groundwater and the treatment that may be required prior to reuse or discharge.

  • The cartographic collection of the Doc Fisher Geoscience Library consists of the maps and air photos created or acquired by agency staff since the formation of BMR in 1946. This includes maps produced by agencies which have merged with these over the years, such as AUSLIG. Maps held include: Australian geological map series (1:250,000, 1:100,000 and the 1 mile series); topographic maps produced by NATMAP and its predecessors (1:250,000, 1:100,000 and 1:50,000) - latest editions only; various Australian geochemical, geophysical and other thematic maps; geoscience map series from other countries acquired on an exchange basis, including some with accompanying explanatory notes; Non-series maps acquired by donation or exchange; atlases. The Air photos are predominantly those used for mapping Australia and, to a lesser extent, Papua New Guinea and Antarctica, by BMR/AGSO from the 1940s to the 1980s. Geographical coverage of the sets is not complete, but many individual photos are unique in that they have pin points, overlays or other markings made by teams in the field. The Papua New Guinea photographs in the collection may, in many cases, be the only existing copies. Flight diagrams are also held for many (but not all) sets of air photos. Some other related materials, such as montages of aerial photographs (orthophotos), are also represented in the collection.

  • <div>As part of the EFTF Program, Geoscience has completed a 4-year multi-disciplinary study to investigate the energy resource potential of selected onshore basins within central Australia under the Australia’s Future Energy Resources (AFER) Project. A key component of the AFER Project has been a qualitative and quantitative play-based assessment of hydrocarbon resources and geological storage of CO2 (GSC) potential within the Pedirka and western Eromanga basins (Bradshaw et al., 2024a). This study has provided a regional interpretive data set which includes regional seismic and well log interpretations (Bradshaw et al.&nbsp;2024b, 2024c); depth-structure and isochore maps for 14 play intervals (Iwanec et al., 2024); gross-depositional environment maps for 14 play intervals (Bradshaw et al., 2024c); and petrophysical analysis of wireline log data from 23 wells (Spicer et al., 2024). This report provides a high-level summary of the hydrogeology of Pedirka and western Eromanga basins as background information for the other assessments and some findings from the 3D models that may inform future understanding of the hydrogeology of these basins. </div><div><br></div><div>The assessment area extends over ~210,000 km2 across the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland (Figure 1). Much of the assessment area underlies national parks in South Australia and Queensland. No petroleum exploration access is allowed in the Munga Thirri Simpson Desert Conservation Park or the Witjira National Park (Dalhousie Springs area) in South Australia or Munga Thirri National Park in Queensland (Figure 1).</div><div><br></div><div>The AFER assessment area is situated within the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre surface water catchment. The catchment’s arid climate and ephemeral river flow regime (Evans et al., 2024) makes groundwater a critical source of water for the environment, industry and communities, especially during dry periods. Groundwater dependent features in the region include water supplies for communities, industry and pastoral stations, as well as springs and other groundwater dependent ecosystems. Groundwater resources are managed by state and territory jurisdictions (see: NT Government, 2013; Queensland Government, 2017, SA Government, 2021). Across the three jurisdictions, the most important groundwater resources are those of the western Eromanga Basin (a part of Great Artesian Basin or GAB). In collaboration with state jurisdictions the Commonwealth provides a cross-jurisdictional policy framework for the GAB as well as the Lake Eyre surface water basin (DCCEEW, 2024). Key management goals include maintaining artesian pressures, water quality and viability of GAB dependent ecosystems, including springs.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

    Total magnetic intensity (TMI) data measures variations in the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field caused by the contrasting content of rock-forming minerals in the Earth crust. Magnetic anomalies can be either positive (field stronger than normal) or negative (field weaker) depending on the susceptibility of the rock. The data are processed via standard methods to ensure the response recorded is that due only to the rocks in the ground. The results produce datasets that can be interpreted to reveal the geological structure of the sub-surface. The processed data is checked for quality by GA geophysicists to ensure that the final data released by GA are fit-for-purpose. These line dataset from the Murrindal, Vic, 1996 VIMP Survey (GSV3060) survey were acquired in 1995 by the VIC Government, and consisted of 15589 line-kilometres of data at 200m line spacing and 80m terrain clearance. To constrain long wavelengths in the data, an independent data set, the Australia-wide Airborne Geophysical Survey (AWAGS) airborne magnetic data, was used to control the base levels of the survey data. This survey data is essentially levelled to AWAGS.

  • This service has been created specifically for display in the National Map and the chosen symbology may not suit other mapping applications. The Australian Topographic web map service is seamless national dataset coverage for the whole of Australia. These data are best suited to graphical applications. These data may vary greatly in quality depending on the method of capture and digitising specifications in place at the time of capture. The web map service portrays detailed graphic representation of features that appear on the Earth's surface. These features include the administration boundaries from the Geoscience Australia 250K Topographic Data, including state forest and reserves.

  • The Historical Bushfire Boundaries service represents the aggregation of jurisdictional supplied burnt areas polygons stemming from the early 1900's through to 2022 (excluding the Northern Territory). The burnt area data represents curated jurisdictional owned polygons of both bushfires and prescribed (planned) burns. To ensure the dataset adhered to the nationally approved and agreed data dictionary for fire history Geoscience Australia had to modify some of the attributes presented. The information provided within this service is reflective only of data supplied by participating authoritative agencies and may or may not represent all fire history within a state.

  • The Layered Geology of Australia web map service is a seamless national coverage of Australia’s surface and subsurface geology. Geology concealed under younger cover units are mapped by effectively removing the overlying stratigraphy (Liu et al., 2015). This dataset is a layered product and comprises five chronostratigraphic time slices: Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, Neoproterozoic, and Pre-Neoproterozoic. As an example, the Mesozoic time slice (or layer) shows Mesozoic age geology that would be present if all Cenozoic units were removed. The Pre-Neoproterozoic time slice shows what would be visible if all Neoproterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic units were removed.
