  • Assessment of mineral potential in the Regional Forest Agreement Areas (RFAs) required collating mineral potential tract maps of individual deposit styles to produce composite, cumulative and weighted composite and cumulative maps. To achieve that an Avenue-script based ArcView extension was created to combine grids of mineral potential tract maps. The grids were combined to generate maps which showed either the highest (weighted or non-weighted) or cumulated (weighted or non-weighted) values. Resources and Advice Decision Support System (RADSS) combines features of the ArcView extension used in mineral potential assessments in RFAs and ASSESS. It is an ArcView extension with a 'Wizard'-like main dialog that leads the user through the process of creating an output. The system has the capacity to combine GIS-layers (raster and vector) to produce various mineral potential and other suitability maps.

  • The OzCoasts web-based database and information system draws together a diverse range of data and information on Australia's coasts and its estuaries. Maps, images, reports and data can be downloaded and there are tools to assist with coastal science, monitoring, management and policy. The content is arranged into seven inter-linked modules: Search Data, Conceptual Models, Coastal Indicators, Habitat Mapping, Natural Resource Management, Landform and Stability Maps and Climate Change. The Climate Change module is the newest feature of the website and was developed in partnership with the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. The module provides information and tools to help communicate the risks of sea-level rise and other potential impacts of climate change on coastal areas. It includes an elevation data and a modelling portal for access to existing and new elevation data and derived products, including sea level inundation maps for Perth to Mandurah, Melbourne, Sydney, Hunter and Central Coast & Brisbane and Gold Coast. The inundation footprints illustrate three sea level rise scenarios: a low (0.5m), medium (0.8m) and high (1.1m) scenario for a 2100 time period, with values based on IPCC projections (B1 and A1FI scenarios) and more recent science. OzCoasts will also soon deliver the Coastal Eutrophication Risk Assessment Tool (CERAT) for the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, and the Australian Riverscape Classification Service (AURICL) for the Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge (TRaCK) consortium. CERAT will help identify and prioritise land use planning decisions to protect and preserve the health of NSW estuaries. AURICL has a northern tropical focus, and is a dynamic and flexible system for classifying catchments and their rivers based on the similarity, or dissimilarity, of a wide range of parameters.

  • This record is a review and synthesis of geological research undertaken along the northern margin of Australia. The record has been written in support of regional marine planning and provides fundamental baseline scientific information for the Northern Planning Area.

  • This report contains the preliminary results of Geoscience Australia survey 266 to central Torres Strait. The survey was undertaken to investigate the seabed geomorphology and sedimentary processes in the vicinity of Turnagain Island and to infer the possible effects (if any) on the distribution, abundance and survival of seagrasses. The Turnagain Island region was chosen because it is a known site of recent widespread seagrass dieback. The present survey is the first of two by Geoscience Australia to be carried out in 2004 and is part of a larger field-based program managed by the Reef CRC aimed at identifying and quantifying the principal physical and biological processes operating in Torres Strait. The impetus for the program is the threat of widespread seagrass dieback and its effects on local dugong and turtle populations and the implications for indigenous islander communities.

  • The following notes are designed to summarise the work done during my recent visit to North America and United Kingdom. The purpose of the trip to the U.S.A. was to act as an alternate representative at the International Materials Conference, Washington. The International Materials Conference was convened in February 1951, its primary function being to ensure the equitable distribution of certain scarce commodities, and to consider what steps should be taken to expand production, increase availabilities, and conserve supplies.
