In Australia, coal seams occur in stratified rocks of Permo-Carboniferous, Triassic, Jurassic and Tertiary systems. Black coal occurs in the rocks of the first three systems, and brown coal in the Tertiary. In the Northern Territory, Permo-Carboniferous, Jurassic and Tertiary rocks are present. Coal has been found in the Northern Territory, but none of the occurrences are of commercial importance. The occurrence of coal in the Port Keats - Cliff Head, North and East Coast, and Hale River districts is discussed in this report.

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the degree of uniformity of the earth's magnetic field, particularly with regard to magnetic Declination (or Variation), over an area on which it is proposed to construct a compass swinging base for land swinging of aircraft. Field work commenced on 11th December and terminated on 18th December. Instruments used comprised: Theodolite-Magnetometer and Earth Induction No.18, a Declinometer attachment fitted to a theodolite, and a vertical force Variometer. The results of the survey are presented in this report. Diagrams showing the results of the magnetic investigations, and a locality plan are included.

Results of a micropalaeontological examination of samples from bores Nos. 3855 and 3859. Samples were from the depths of 7 to 427 feet down and 1 to 977 feet down respectively.

The mine manager at Mount Bischoff Tin Mine, Mr. Eddy, proposes to mine the Greisen Orebody by means of a system of gloryholes, in combination with stoping. It was requested that a scheme of development work necessary for opening up the orebodies preparatory to mining should be decided on and set out on paper. This report is concerned with the proposals for development and testing work which would determine whether the larger gloryhole would be justified or whether a smaller gloryhole on the hanging wall ore and stoping on footwall ore would be a more profitable method.

Magnetic observations were made in the vicinity of the Range for the purpose of determining the probable normal values of the vertical (Z) and horizontal (H) force components of the Earth's magnetic field in that part of the harbour which would be occupied by a ship in passing over the coils. The results of the survey are presented in this report. Two accompanying plans are included.

Results of an examination of samples from the depth of 1564 feet down to 2015 feet.

The Pannikin Mine is situated on the south side of the Hart's Range about 7 miles southeast of Mount Riddock and about 9 or 10 miles a little south of east from Schaber's homestead. The Elbow deposit is about 1 1/2 miles south-southwest from the Pannikin. The two deposits, and another smaller one in the same locality, were visited on 22nd October, 1944. The accompanying plan of the Pannikin was made with compass and tape. The report comprises notes on the two mica deposits. Accompanying sketch plans of the Pannikin and Elbow deposits are included.
