During the summer of 1947, an expedition was despatched to Heard Island with the object of landing a party to spend about twelve months there. Geological work was undertaken by the writer. The results of this work are recorded in this report. These results include observations on the geomorphology of the island, and a description of the xenolithic ejectamenta collected from the tuffs of Rogers Head and Rogers Head Peninsula.

Samples of "glauconite" were collected from the glauconitic sandstone at Lakes Entrance and the glauconitic fossiliferous Miocene limestone of Maslin's Beach and Hackham. The refractive indices of the samples were measured. The results were compared against the range of refractive indices for glauconite, as given by A.N. Winchell. The composition of the samples and the observed results are discussed in this report.

Results are given of investigations carried out to detect any variation in the relative proportions of the several heavy minerals in heavy concentrates separated out from beach sands of the Broadbeach Recreational Area. The possible variation of the thoria content of monazite in the area is also investigated. Results indicate a systematic variation from east to west in the proportion of Zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the concentrates. The thoria content of the monazite in the area is shown to be constant within experimental limits.

This report contains an account of the open cut coal investigations in the Cessnock Muswellbrook region. The area herein reported on is of 1.29 square miles, in the Parish of Howick, County of Durham. Twenty-two bore holes were sunk all of which, totalling 2,749 ft., were cored throughout. The conclusions herein reported are the result of field teamwork by two groups of the Bureau of Mineral Resources. The Petroleum Technology Party was responsible for all basic data obtained from boring. The Geological Party was responsible for locating boreholes, topographic surveying and interpreting and recording results inferred from the basic data. In addition, draughting, map compilation, and petrological and palaeontological determinations were carried out.

The period 7th to 28th January, 1951 was spent at Selwyn by the writer: approximately one week was spent in preparing a semi-regional map at a scale of 1 inch to 400 feet; one week was given to mapping a smaller area at a scale of 1 inch to 40 feet. Level plans have been constructed showing what are considered to be the broad outlines of ore arrangement and structure and a number of sections have been constructed. Nineteen plans and sections illustrate this report. Twelve typical ore and rock specimens were studied in thin section and the information obtained has been incorporated in this report. An account of the regional geology of the prospect and the geology of the ore deposits is given in this report.
