This map shows the area of the Kuuku Ya'u Native Title Claim, which extends approximately between Olive River and Nyllichi Point in Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. The map was produced for the Attorney-General's Department. Not for public distribution.

Geoscience Australia has the primary role in the delineation of Australia's domestic and international maritime limits and boundaries. An output of this activity is the development of the Australian Maritime Boundaries (AMB) data. AMB is a GIS data product, replacing AMBIS 2006, providing access to the data for Australia's maritime zones. AMB is a digital representation of Australia's limits and boundaries as established under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973 and associated proclamations. The data also include a representation of the limits by which the scheduled and offshore areas of each of the States and of the Northern Territory are determined under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 (OPGGSA). In the event of an inconsistency between AMB data and the limits under any legislation, the latter prevails. The data have been published by Geoscience Australia in consultation with other relevant Commonwealth Government agencies including the Attorney-General's Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Hydrographic Office. AMB data comprise the territorial straight baselines and the outer limits of each zone, together with maritime boundaries determined by treaties between Australia and neighbouring countries. All data coordinates are supplied in the GDA94 datum. The data reflects the location of the coastline within the constraints of available source material at the time of production. A new research vessel will replace the Southern Surveyor as Australia's marine national facility in 2013. CSIRO is leading the commissioning of the new vessel. An increased level of Federal Government funding means that a very high quality vessel, with excellent equipment and adequate support staff, will be at sea for about 300 days per year from 2013. The new vessel will be about 85 m long, ice strengthened, with a large open rear deck, have a range of 12,000 nautical miles, an endurance of 60 days, and be able to carry a scientific contingent of up to 50, which is a significant improvement over the current situation. It will be a very thoroughly equipped vessel (see www. marine.csiro.au/nationalfacillity/management/RCAP_PII_Report_Exposure_Draft.pdf). As far as marine geoscience requirements are concerned, the vessel will be fitted with full-ocean depth (5-8,000 m) multibeam sonars and a sub-bottom profiler so that for the first time it can map our entire marine jurisdiction. Other essential geoscience equipment includes: deep-sea winches and heavy wire for dredging, long (up to 30 m) piston-corer, deep-water grabs with camera, and 2D capable seismic system. Detailed specifications, including equipment type and capabilities, were drawn up in 2009 and formed the basis of the Statement of Requirements based on consultation with the marine geoscience community (see http://www.iodp.org.au/index.php?p=news). There is no doubt that the new vessel will be a huge step forward for Australian marine science. There will be a focus on multi-disciplinary voyages and an active program for student participation. This vessel is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to develop the capability required for Australia to better understand and manage our huge marine jurisdiction. This will underpin and enhance Australia's international reputation as a leading marine science nation.

This map has been created to support the Taruman illegal fishing court case, and is part of a map series. It shows recorded suspected long line locations and aerial photograph locations within Australia's AFZ around Macquarie Island for Exhibit 11/09/05-4.1, Exhibit 11/09/05-4.3, and Exhibit 14/09/05-1.1. It also shows the "MaxSea" ship locations for the Taruman with the additional longline coordinates added to the ship locations but does not show the ship route.
