Abstract
The purpose of this dataset is to provide the AMSIS user with details of maritime names which are significant in giving context and visual reference to the other datasets in the application. This data is a subset of the Gazetteer of Australia 2005 release. Offshore features and some near coastal features that where originally sourced from the Maritime Gazetteer of Australia, of the Australian Hydrographic Service, where selected for display in AMSIS.

Lineage
This data is a subset of the Gazetteer of Australia 2005 release. All offshore features and some near coastal features that where originally sourced from the Australian Hydrographic Service's Maritime Gazetteer of Australia where selected for display in AMSIS The Gazetteer of Australia (or National Gazetteer, NatGaz) is compiled annually by the Geospatial and Earth Monitoring Division of Geoscience Australia, on behalf of the Committee for Geographical Names in Australasia (a committee of the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping ICSM). Data is sourced from the relevant State and Territory jurisdictions (ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, WA) along with various Australian Government agencies (Australian Antarctic Division, Australia Hydrographic Service, and Geoscience Australia). Postcode data was matched to placename localities using data sourced from Australia Post's Postcode Database. The Maritime Gazetteer of Australia (MGA) is a searchable database containing all names as charted in Australia's official navigational charts. Its purpose is to provide a mariner with details of maritime names which are significant in his process of navigation at sea. The Gazetteer of Australia [GOA] does not deal with names eg. pilotage areas, shipping routes, harbour berths, roadsteads and ship anchorages
