Abstract
This report covers the new NSW Metallic Mineral Occurrence Database (METMIN) which has been developed to replace the former former MRLIS/ALLMIN databases. The METMIN database is a relational database that has been developed using MS ACCESS software. The database has been designed for modelling in a GIS environment. Two fundamental changes distinguish this database from previous databases. The database uses the full term rather than a concatenated code as the allowable term in any field, and the amount of metal present in a deposit is recorded in a 'calculated field'. Included in the METMIN-97 data package is the new data for the Bathurst, Bega, and Ulladulla 1:250 000 sheet areas together with the preliminary data for the Dubbo, Menindi and Canberra areas. In total, the METMIN-97 data release contains details on over 8000 mineral occurrences covering the southern New England, Lachlan, Adelaide and the southern part of the Broken Hill terrains. In addition, a number of occurrences from the Kanmantoo Fold Belt and the Sydney-Bowen Basin have been included. The METMIN-97 data package contains the METMIN database together with a Mineral Occurrence map in both Mapinfo V4 and ArcView V2.1 format. In addition three other layers have been included from the Lachlan Fold Belt package (available separately). These are the Structural block map, a 250K sheet boundary index and a 100K sheet boundary index. These layers have been included to give those users without appropriate GIS coverages for New South Wales, a set of basic layers. In addition the dataset has been included as a single Ascii file for those users wishing to use other software.

Lineage
The Geological Survey of New South Wales, Department of Mineral Resources, commenced its Metallogenic Mapping program in the late 1960s. As part of the metallogenic mapping program, mine data sheets were compiled and published together with metallogenic notes to accompany each map sheet. During the mid 1980s the mine data sheets were computerised and incorporated in the Departments land information system (MRLIS). More recently the database has been maintained and extended using Symantec Q&A software; however it still reflected the original mine data sheet structure. Following a review of the existing data structure and allowable terms in late 1995, the structure of the database has been upgraded to meet the needs of users in a GIS environment using Microsoft ACCESS V2 as the compilation software package (Downes, 1996). More information available in DOCUMENT/METADATA.DOC. The mine data sheets were originally compiled from a range of Departmental publications and unpublished reports. Company exploration reports held by the Department were a major information source. In addition, information has been obtained from academic journals, conference proceedings and unpublished university theses. Other sources include newspapers, company annual reports, prospectuses, and reports from other government agencies. Many of the occurrences have been visited by the Departments geologists and their observations have been incorporated into the record. In some instances, there are no historical records and only field observations have been included. Each mineral occurrence record has references to the source of the data used for compilation of that record. The data for the Forbes, Dubbo, Canberra and Goulburn 1:250 000 sheet areas is in the process of being updated. A preliminary version of the new Dubbo dataset together with recently compiled data for the Bathurst, Ulladulla, Canberra and Bega areas has been included in the METMIN-97 database release. Under the D2000 program the Koonenberry, Cargelligo, Narrandera, Bourke and Nyngan datasets were partially updated. This data has also been included in the METMIN-97 release. Table 1 outlines the Update history for each 1:250 000 sheet area.
