Abstract
Names of Limits of International oceans and seas have been defined in 1953 by the International Hydrographic Bureau, referenced as S-23. This dataset names the areas of oceans and seas defined by the latest edition of the S-23. This edition takes into account Australia's preferred names and extents of southern ocean.

Lineage
Ocean and sea names have been defined by the International Hydrographic Bureau S-23 Limits of Oceans and Seas. The AODC had a copy of the S-23 and sent it Geoscience Australia. This data uses coordinates as defined in the S-23 to delineate the areas of oceans and seas. The coastline data originated from the ESRI coastline data. Due to the low resolution of data the Australian coastline was replaced using the Global Map 1:1M data. Australia's definition of the Southern Ocean and neighbouring oceans and seas, as defined in the new draft edition of the oceans and seas from the International Hydrographic Bureau, has been added to agree with the Australian Hydrographic Office's definitions of surrounding oceans and seas.
