Surface-wave Velocity Mapping of the Delamerian Region

<div>To investigate shallow crustal structure across the Delamerian region, this study generates a surface-wave phase velocity map at 1.6 s period. This ambient-noise derived map of surface wave velocity is the shortest period map yet produced for Australia with even data coverage. This map provides velocity values sensitive to the uppermost few kilometres of the crust (~ top 2 km), allowing direct comparison with the distribution of basins and bedrock near the surface.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Purpose

This product provides a shallow-crust surface-wave velocity map for the Delamerian region, derived from ambient seismic noise. The seismic data were acquired during the Exploring for the Future program's AusArray deployment and the Australian National Seismograph Network. The dataset reliably distinguishes low-velocity sedimentary basins from high-velocity bedrock near the surface, demonstrating strong agreement with known geology. It is fit-for-purpose for regional geological interpretation, basin mapping, and shallow crustal studies.

Statement

<div>The dataset originates from continuous broadband seismic data collected by the AusArray 2 by 2 degree deployment (during the Exploring for the Future program) and Australian National Seismograph Network. These data were processed to generate Noise Correlation Functions following established ambient-noise procedures, including temporal normalisation, spectral whitening, cross-correlation, and linear stacking using the HiPerSeis software ( https://github.com/GeoscienceAustralia/hiperseis). Phase-velocity dispersion curves between all station pairs were then automatically extracted using an in-house semi-automated algorithm based on Aki’s (1957) spectral formulation and refined using methods described in Hejrani et al. (2023). The dispersion measurements were subsequently inverted using 2-D surface-wave tomography (Rawlinson & Sambridge, 2005, 2012) to produce the 1.6-s Rayleigh-wave velocity map. No further transformations have been applied beyond standard quality control and map generation. </div><div><br></div><div>This surface wave map is a piece in the ambient noise tomography of the Australian continent, which will be fully delivered by June 2027. </div>
