West Musgrave 3D palaeovalley point dataset ~ Base of Cenozoic depth estimates made using AusAEM (airborne electromagnetic) conductivity models

As part of the Exploring for the Future program, Geoscience Australia undertook an investigation into palaeovalley groundwater resources within the West Musgrave region of Australia (Symington et al., 2024). The investigation, which spans the WA, SA and NT borders, inferred the architecture of the region’s palaeovalleys via interpretation of airborne electromagnetic conductivity models, borehole data and geologic outcrop. This record presents the base of Cenozoic depth estimates made along the AusAEM airborne electromagnetic (AEM) conductivity models used in this investigation.

To maximize the value of depth estimates from projects across Geoscience Australia, the Estimates of Geological and Geophysical Surfaces (EGGS) database was developed to store standardised interpretations of stratigraphic horizons (Mathews et al., 2020).

Standardisation in part aims to maintain the ability for users to take point data/depth estimates from the EGGS database and recombine them back into their original line data/interpreted horizons. To achieve this, all points along any particular segment need to maintain identical metadata. This requirement means that annotations made to a single point will propagate across the whole segment of which it is part.

As such, the base of Cenozoic depth estimates from this investigation, originally created with Petrel, were annotated to enhance the value of the data and then standardised to comply with the requirements of the database. These modifications facilitate the integration of these depth estimates into future models delivered under the Resourcing Australia's Prosperity initiative (RAPi).

Statement

These point data form the (partial) basis from which the base of Cenozoic surface was released, as part of the West Musgrave 3D palaeovalley model report and data (Symington et al., 2024).
These points were derived along AusAEM flight lines, and do not include the dummy thalweg points nor those associated with SPECTREM flight lines as described by Symington et al., 2024
Annotations were made to this subset to make them EGGS compliant. Annotations are described in the Metadata statement.
