Abstract
This dataset is a digital representation of the Australian Fishing Zone as defined in the Fisheries Management Act 1991 as amended in the Maritime Legislation Amendment Act 1994. It is constructed, for the most part from the GA Australian Maritime Boundaries (AMB) product, prior to but in exactly the same form and content as, AMB release. It is purely for display in the AMSIS web application.

Lineage
The Australian Fishing Zone is defined in the Fisheries Management Act 1991 as amended in the Maritime Legislation Amendment Act 1994. The description of the Australian Fishing Zone is as follows: Australia fishing zone means: (a) the waters adjacent to Australia within the outer limits of the exclusive economic zone; and (b) the waters adjacent to each external territory within the outer limits of the exclusive economic zone; but does not include: (c) coastal waters of, or waters within the limits of, a State or internal Territory; or (d) waters that are excepted waters. In defining what constitutes the inner and outer limits of the Australian Fishing Zone the following are relevant: (a) The outer limit of the 'coastal waters' is the 3 nautical mile line from the territorial sea baselines. Since the Australian fishing Zone does not include coastal waters (see paragraph (c) of the definition) that same outer limit of 'coastal waters' forms the inner limit of the Australian Fishing Zone. (b) The outer limit of the Australian Fishing Zone is the same as the outer limit of the exclusive economic zone (see paragraphs (a) and (b) of the definition) other than in places where the 'excepted waters' Proclamation in Gazette no.S52 of 14 February 1992 remains relevant ( see paragraph (d) of the definition). The 'excepted waters' Proclamation remains relevant in two areas, in the Torres Strait and in waters adjacent to the Australian Antarctic Territory (Parts 5 and 6 of the 1992 Proclamation). The other parts of the 1992 'excepted waters' Proclamation have been rendered redundant by the Proclamation of the outer limits of the exclusive economic zone which entered into force on 1 August 1994. They have been rendered redundant because they largely cover the same lines as are used in the 1994 exclusive economic zone Proclamation. (c) In Part 5 of the 'excepted waters' Proclamation referring to waters in the Torres Strait it makes reference to "all waters north of the line" and then lists the coordinates. These coordinates are the largely same as those for the Protected Zone in Annex 9 to the Treaty between Australia and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea concerning Sovereignty and Maritime Boundaries in the Area between the two Countries, including the Area known as Torres Strait, and Related Matters. This Treaty came into force on 15 February 1985. The outer limit of coastal waters and the exclusive economic zone are derived as a distance from the baseline have been rigorously computed using specialises geodetic software rather than simple buffering. This software, known as MarZone was developed specifically for this purpose by the Department of Geomatics, University of Melbourne under contract to Geoscience Australia. Other maritime boundaries included in AMB, such as the 'Protected Zone', have been digitised from their description in the relevant legal instrument such as treaty. Where necessary, these coordinates have undergone a datum transformation to be consistent with other AMB data. The Australian Fishing Zone was built from a combination of AMB data for the outer limits of coastal waters, exclusive economic zone and Protected Zone.
