  • At this scale 1cm on the map represents 1km on the ground. Each map covers a minimum area of 0.5 degrees longitude by 0.5 degrees latitude or about 54 kilometres by 54 kilometres. The contour interval is 20 metres. Many maps are supplemented by hill shading.

  • The Bureau of Mineral Resources made three seismic surveys in the Ngalia Basin, Northern Territory, during 1967 to 1969 as part of a comprehensive geological and geophysical investigation of the structure and stratigraphy of the basin. L079 is the first survey done in 1967. The project was aimed at delineating the configuration of the basin, within which outcrops are sparse, and providing information pertaining to its depositional and tectonic history. Investigation of the extent of Lower Palaeozoic sedimentation was considered to be important in assessment of the petroleum prospects of the basin. Raw data for this survey are available on request from clientservices@ga.gov.au - Quote eCat# 75658

  • Between 11th April and 1st July 1967 a ground survey party of the Bureau of Mineral Resources inspected a number of abandoned airfields in the Gr~t Victoria Desert, the Gibson Desert, and the Great Sandy Desert for their suitability as Isogal stations in the extension to the west coast of Isogal flight-lines EW7A, EW5A, and EW4.A. For the same reason a number of homestead airfields were visited between Anna Plains and Hamelin Pool in Western Australia. Two authorised landing areas (Warri and Lake Yeo) were constructed in areas where no airstrip existed. Iosgal groundwork was prepared on twenty-nine airfields.

  • The R502 series of maps has been replaced by the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS). The R502 series consists of 542 map sheets and covers Australia at a scale of 1:250,000. It was compiled from aerial photography, but only about one quarter of the series was contoured. The standard sheet size is 1 degree of latitude by 1.5 degrees of longitude. Transverse Mercator map projection and Clark 1858 datum were used. Coverage of the country was completed in 1968.
