Abstract
In August 2013 Phosphate Resources Limited (PRL) provided Geoscience Australia with new pinnacle field location data for the entire extent of Christmas Island. This work was completed by Khairin Amin and James Keogh from PRL in July 2013. The pinnacle boundaries shapefile is named pinnacles_2013.shp and contains the following detailed fields: Type, Description, Area, Perimeter, Hectares, Accuracy and Lease.

Lineage
PRL used two different methods to outline areas of pinnacles depending on whether they were mined by previous mining companies (labelled legacy fields) or mined by PRL. Legacy fields were mapped by using all available orthophotography and satellite imagery to roughly digitise the visible pinnacle areas over time, then refining the outlines using the 2011 DEM. Fields mined by PRL were mapped using RTK survey, which is accurate to +/-20cm. In the case that a pinnacle field has been rehabilitated and the boundaries were not distinguishable from the orthophotography/DEM, or RTK, they were mapped using the Parks Australia North shapefile showing areas that have been rehabilitated. The accuracy of the rehabbed shapefile is unknown. Once pinnacle field boundaries were mapped, fields were classified as still exposed pinnacles (pinnacles), been made safe/trafficable (made safe), or rehabbed (rehab). The pinnacle boundaries shapefile is pinnacles_2013.shp and contains the following fields: Type, Description, Area, Perimeter, Hectares, Accuracy and Lease. The 2013 pinnacles shapefile is a much more comprehensive and accurate depiction of pinnacle fields on the island, compared to the pinnacles 2010, 2009ne, and 2002 shapefiles.
