Abstract
Melbourne 2007 LiDAR data was made up of several project areas that were funded by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria that results in the delivery of 1m DEM and 0.5m contours, captured and supplied by AAMHatch. The Port Phillip and Western Port LiDAR Project was acquired for several local government areas namely, Bayside (20 April 2007 and 1 May 2007, 1km tiles), Boorondara, Glen Eira, Kingston, Port Phillip and Stonnington. Brimbank City Council, inner suburbs including part of the CBD area, Yarra River and South Mornington Coast data is in 2km tiles captured between 20 April 2007 and 10 July 2007. The Melbourne - Geelong Corridor area was captured between 24 April 2007 and 29 July 2007 for an area of approximately 145 square kilometres in 2km tiles. The data has an overall horizontal accuracy of 35cm and a vertical accuracy has been confirmed at <10cm. The data are available as mass point files (ASCII, LAS, shp, MapInfo TAB) with a density of 0.8- 0.85 points per square metre and ESRI GRID files with 1m grid spacing and 0.5m inundation contours.

Raw LiDAR: Laser strikes were classified into ground and non-ground points using a specifically designed algorithm applied across the entire project area. The quality of the classification was further improved by manual checking and editing of the ALS data using intensity imagery and orthophoto imagery as a reference. Following classification, LiDAR files were exported into XYZI textfile format. ALS strikes on water bodies have been omitted from the dataset. The definition of the ground under trees may be less accurate. The raw LiDAR data contains ground, first return and thinned data for Bayside, Brimbank has the additional non-ground points supplied. DEM Product: The ground LiDAR points were used to generate a "bare-earth" DEM. The ground data points were imported to a "point" feature class in ESRI ArcGIS. Following the import to ESRI format, the points were converted to a Terrain Data Type and then interpolated into regularly spaced 1m grids. The grid files were finally exported to XYZ ascii format. Contours: All contour generation was carried using Intergraph Microstation software. The contours are created by referencing the all ground LiDAR strikes. A number of macros are applied to the all ground strikes before contour generation. These macros basically thin and smooth the LiDAR ground strikes. Contours are then generated automatically from the smoothed LiDAR strikes. Contours are derived by interpolation of a surface model generated from LiDAR ground points using process parameters optimised to suit the terrain. The contours are then checked using any available imagery as a backdrop and line work cleaned where required. Final macros are applied to the contour line work which check for dangles, loops, spikes etc. At the final stage we use FME software to convert the Microstation design files to ESRI Shape and MapInfo TAB files.
