Abstract
<div>Groundwater is a finite and largely hidden resource. Enhancing scientific understanding of groundwater systems improves decisions about its planning, allocation and use. This benefits all Australians through improved water management.</div><div>Australia’s groundwater resources underpin billions of dollars of economic activity, provide safe and reliable drinking water for millions of people, and sustain life and cultural values across the country. Sustainably managing our critical groundwater resources is vital to improving water security and protecting the environment.</div><div>Geoscience Australia and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) collaborate on initiatives funded by the Australian Government. We work together to deliver innovative solutions to nationally significant issues affecting Australia’s groundwater resources.</div><div>With world‑class expertise and facilities, we are at the forefront of groundwater science. Our combined hydrogeological capabilities are best applied to regional and national-scale challenges that extend beyond the remit of individual jurisdictions or private industry.</div><div>This publication highlights the scientific approaches, technologies, and methods that we apply to better understand and characterise Australia’s groundwater and includes case studies that demonstrate the unique value of our collaboration.</div><div><br></div>

Purpose
This document is a joint capability statement co-produced by Geoscience Australia and CSIRO to showcase the range of groundwater challenges that these agencies address through collaborative work programs. The document provides an overview of groundwater research themes and interests relevant to both agencies, as well as documenting several groundwater research case studies in which Geoscience Australia and the CSIRO have collaborated to address nationally important groundwater challenges. The case study examples include work undertaken for the Bioregional Assessment Program, the Geological and Bioregional Assessment Program, and Assessing the Status of Groundwater in the Great Artesian Basin.

Lineage
<div>The idea for creating this joint capability statement developed from a series of collaborative workshops undertaken by staff working in various areas of groundwater-related research from Geoscience Australia and the CSIRO. Several workshops occurred in 2021 across a range of groundwater themes, including topics such as hydrogeology, hydrochemistry, hydrogeophysics and remote sensing applications. Following-on from the content and ideas raised at these workshops, a smaller working group of GA and CSIRO staff collaborated to condense the wealth of material presented at the workshops and distil the information into a 16-page brochure-style document to raise broader awareness of the joint groundwater research expertise and capabilities that reside within these national agencies. Over the course of several product iterations the information presented in the document was refined to provide an overview of the type of collaborative work undertaken by both agencies, with a focus on several case studies where GA and CSIRO have combined their groundwater-focused expertise to address significant national-scale challenges. </div>
