Results of a seismic survey in the southern Denison Trough, Queensland, 1978-79

During 1978-79 BMR conducted a regional seismic survey in the southern Denison Trough, western Bowen Basin, Queensland. The aims of the survey were to examine the structural configuration of the trough, particularly at lower Permian and basement level, and to obtain stratigraphic data that would enable reliable mapping of stratigraphic units throughout the trough. The survey obtained good quality data, which allowed mapping of the distribution and thickness of most rock units along the seismic lines. The base of the Permian sequence is, however, difficult to map in areas of thick Early Permian sediments. Several major and minor phases of deformation are recognised that have affected the Denison Trough sediments. Major movements occurred at the commencement of sedimentation in the Early Permian, towards the end of deposition of the Reids Dome Beds in the Early Permian, and in the Mid-Late Triassic. Lesser phases of movement occurred throughout the Early Permian and in the Late or post-Jurassic. Several major Early Permian structures have been described for the first time. This has aided better understanding of the structural development of the trough, and definition of the extent of important structural units. The extent and configuration of the Comet Platform has been substantially redefined. The development of the Merivale Fault is now better understood and its northerly extension has been located.
