Defining a chemostratigraphic framework for the Adavale Basin - Inorganic and stable isotopic analysis of 10 petroleum wells from the Adavale Basin, Queensland

<div>As part of the Data Driven Discoveries program, Geoscience Australia and the Geological Survey of Queensland collaborated to re-examine legacy well cuttings for a chemostratigraphic study. The aim was to identify opportunities for resource discovery in the Devonian-aged Adavale Basin in south-central Queensland by conducting a chemostratigraphic study to define regional stratigraphic correlations in a structurally complex basin with limited well penetrations. A total of 1,489 cutting samples were analysed for whole-rock geochemistry, as well as subsets of samples for whole-rock mineralogy and/or carbonate carbon and oxygen isotopes, from a whole-rock sample. The purpose was to establish new chemostratigraphic correlations across the basin independently, using data from 10 wells that sampled the Adavale Basin.</div>

Purpose

In order to establish an independent chemostratigraphic correlation across the Adavale Basin, whole rock inorganic geochemistry from selected well penetrations is used. Previous attempts to correlate the Devonian-aged strata have been hindered by factors such as partial well penetrations, structural complexities, a coeval siliciclastic-carbonate system, limited outcropping of Devonian stratigraphy in central Queensland, and limited palaeontological coverage across the wider region. However, a chemostratigraphic approach can help overcome these challenges and establish regional correlations across the basin.

Statement

<div>Sampling was carried out at the Core Library in Canberra and the Exploration Centre in Brisbane. A total of 1,489 cutting samples were collected from 10 wells within the Adavale Basin and analyzed for whole rock inorganic geochemistry using Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). An 800-sample subset was further analyzed for whole rock mineralogy by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and a 556-sample subset was analyzed for carbon and oxygen isotopes by Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS). After the ICP-OES/MS analysis, the sample representativeness was checked by cross-plotting the ChemGR, a synthetic gamma ray derived from elemental K, Th, and U, over the traditional wireline. This technique showed that most of the samples were representative of the depths they were taken from, and a high level of confidence could be attributed to the interpretation. Isotopic analysis was conducted on samples with Ca content greater than 2%. The XRD dataset was collected and modeled against the elemental data to generate calculated mineralogy for the other samples using the Random Forest technique. The modeled mineralogy output showed a good match to the XRD. Both datasets distinguished between siliciclastic minerals, such as partitioning the Na data between the halite and the plagioclase, and carbonate-prone intervals, identifying the key carbonate minerals calcite and dolomite in their respective proportions.</div>
