Onshore Depleted Gas Fields and Underground Gas Storage Facilities (2021)
Depleted gas fields can potentially be used for large scale storage of gases such as carbon dioxide, natural gas and hydrogen.
Onshore Depleted Gas Fields
This dataset maps the spatial distribution of depleted gas fields across onshore Australia.
Underground Gas Storage Facilities
This dataset maps the spatial distribution of underground gas storage facilities across Australia. Underground gas storage facilities utilise depleted gas fields for the seasonal storage of natural gas in Australia. The injection, withdrawal and storage capacities of each underground gas storage facility is included within this dataset.
This dataset is published with the permission of the CEO, Geoscience Australia.

These two datasets provide open access to the locations of onshore depleted gas fields and currently operating underground gas storage facilities across Australia. They are both displayed as a web service on Geoscience Australia's, Australia's Hydrogen Opportunities tool (ww.AusH2.gov.au). Additionally, these datasets will be included in the second iteration of Geoscience Australia's Hydrogen Economic Fairways Tool (HEFT), due to be publically released toward the end of 2021. The first iteration of HEFT is live and can be accessed at the AusH2 website.

The Depleted Gas Fields dataset has been generated using a combination of data provided by State geological surveys and openly sourced information. Only depleted gas fields located across onshore Australia have been included in this dataset. The Underground Gas Storage Facilities dataset has been generated from open source information.
