Layered Geology Of Australia WFS

The Layered Geology of Australia web map service is a seamless national coverage of Australia’s surface and subsurface geology. Geology concealed under younger cover units are mapped by effectively removing the overlying stratigraphy (Liu et al., 2015). This dataset is a layered product and comprises five chronostratigraphic time slices: Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, Neoproterozoic, and Pre-Neoproterozoic. As an example, the Mesozoic time slice (or layer) shows Mesozoic age geology that would be present if all Cenozoic units were removed. The Pre-Neoproterozoic time slice shows what would be visible if all Neoproterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic units were removed. Statement

The data in this web service has been created as part of Geoscience Australia's Exploring for the Future program and is the third staged release of Geoscience Australia's national chronostratigraphic layered geology mapping program commenced under the EFTF, and builds on the first release for the Tennant Creek-Mount Isa area (Stewart, 2018) and the second release for the North Australian Craton (Stewart et al., 2020). This product includes updates to the North Australian Craton layered solid geology of Stewart et al (2020) including incorporation of the East Tennant layered solid geology of Clark et al. (2021), replacement of the Western Australian portion of the dataset with more recent source data from the Geological Survey of Western Australia (2020), and modification of polygons and stratigraphic information at boundaries between the North Australian Craton dataset and the adjoining states. The national layered geology layers were compiled using various datasets and checked against the available drill hole data from state and territory geological survey and GA databases (primarily Vizy and Rollet, 2023). Interpretations were compiled at 1:250 000 scale and the final product is best utilised at 1:1 million scale. For further information please refer to https://pid.geoscience.gov.au/dataset/ga/149179.
