A Revised Structural Framework for Frontier Basins on the Southern and Southwestern Australian Continental Margin

The southern and southwestern continental margin of Australia includes vast, under-explored areas underlain by sufficiently thick sedimentary strata (>3 km) to generate substantial amounts of hydrocarbons if source rocks are present. One impediment to petroleum exploration has been a limited understanding of the geological framework of the basins in this region. The Bight and Mentelle basins, and the offshore component of the Perth Basin, are remapped within the southern and southwestern margin. Each basin has a unique structural architecture that formed during different stages in the break-up of Australia, Antarctica and Greater India. The Bight Basin extends for about 2100 km along the southern margin, and formed during rifting between Australia and Antarctica in the Middle Jurassic-Late Cretaceous. Sub-divisions of the Bight Basin include the previously recognised Eyre, Ceduna and Recherche sub-basins, along with a series of remapped Middle Jurassic-Early Cretaceous half-graben systems - the Duntroon, Bremer and Denmark sub-basins - and Cretaceous platform covers, the Madura and Couedic shelves. The Perth Basin extends for approximately 1300 km along the southwestern continental margin, and formed during rifting between Australia and Greater India in the Permian-Early Cretaceous. A new sub-division of the Perth Basin, the Zeewyck Sub-basin, is a deep water rift basin that formed either during or just following Early Cretaceous (Valanginian) break-up. The Mentelle Basin, located between the Naturaliste Plateau and Leeuwin Complex, is a recently defined frontier basin that formed near a triple junction between Australia, Antarctica and Greater India during the Middle Jurassic-Early Cretaceous.
