Assaying of radioactive rocks and ores

The information presented in this bulletin is based on experience gained by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics, in, certain types of radioactive measurements. From the physicist's point of view, the contents will probably appear to be rather disconnected. However, the topics discussed have been chosen as being of interest to organizations such as mining companies desirous of employing physical methods of measurement in connexion with the search for, and development of, deposits of radioactive minerals, without any particular interest in the purely scientific, aspects of the subject. The following topics are treated:-

1. Naturally occurring radioactive elements, with a brief note on isotopes.

2. Principles of the design of instruments for measuring radioactivity.

3. Radiometric assaying.

4. Fluorimetric assaying.

The discussion is based mainly on the experience of the Geophysical Section of the Bureau, but reference is also made to published material from other sources. A brief bibliography refers to literature which has been found useful. It is stressed, however, that, this bibliography is by no means a complete one. The technique of prospecting for radioactive minerals is not discussed in detail, but is merely mentioned incidentally, where required. This subject is adequately covered in a joint publication by the Australian Atomic: Energy Commission and the Department of National Development (1954).
