The geology of the Georgetown-Clarke River area, Queensland

This Bulletin presents the results of a 4-year regional geological mapping programme, covering about 30,000 square miles in the Georgetown/Clarke River area of North Queensland, begun in 1956 and completed in 1959 by joint survey teams of the Bureau of Mineral Resources and the Geological Survey of Queensland. The area contains many goldfields, of which the Etheridge is the largest. Gold has been won here from about 1880 onwards, and other minerals were mined later. The area is covered by the Georgetown, Einasleigh, Gilberton, and Clarke River 1:250,000 Geological Series maps and by parts of the Croydon, Normanton, and Red River maps. It contains the Etheridge, Oaks, Gilbert. Percyville, Woolgar, and Balcooma Goldfields, the southern parts of the Chillagoe and Herberton Gold and Mineral Fields, and the eastern part of the Croydon Goldfield (Fig. 1). The Halls Reward copper deposit, the Perry Creek wolfram deposit, and the Gray Creek chromite deposit are situated near the eastern edge of the Georgetown / Clarke River area, and near the western limit of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. A regional geological survey of the Georgetow n/Clarke River area was begun in 1956 by a combined party from the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics, and the Geological Survey of Queensland. Initially the party examined the radioactive anomalies located in 1954 and 1955 by a Bureau of Mineral Resources aerial scintillograph survey of the Atherton, Georgetown, Einasleigh, Gilberton, and Clarke River 1:250,000 Sheet areas. No economic deposit or radioactive minerals was discovered. The party then began systematic geological mapping in the Georgetown, Einasleigh, Gilberton, and Clarke River 1:250,000 Sheet areas to assess their mineral potential. In 1957 and 1958 geochemical and geophysical surveys were combined with detailed geological mapping at Halls Reward Copper Mine and the Gray Creek chromite deposit. Geological mapping of the four 1:250,000 Sheets was completed in 1959. when Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments were examined.
