Outer Darwin Harbour Marine Survey 2015: TCO2 production and total oxygen uptake of seabed sediments from core incubation experiments.
<p>This resource contains surface sediment data for Outer Darwin Harbour collected by Geoscience Australia (GA), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Northern Territory Government (Department of Land Resource Management) during the period from 28 May and 23 June 2015 on the RV Solander (survey SOL6187/GA0351). This project was made possible through offset funds provided by INPEX-led Ichthys LNG Project to Northern Territory Government Department of Land Resource Management, and co-investment from Geoscience Australia and Australian Institute of Marine Science. The intent of this four year (2014-2018) program is to improve knowledge of the marine environments in the Darwin and Bynoe Harbour regions by collating and collecting baseline data that enable the creation of thematic habitat maps that underpin marine resource management decisions. The specific objectives of the survey were to:
<p>1. Obtain high resolution geophysical (bathymetry) data for outer Darwin Harbour, including Shoal Bay;
<p>2. Characterise substrates (acoustic backscatter properties, grainsize, sediment chemistry) for outer Darwin Harbour, including Shoal Bay; and
<p>3. Collect tidal data for the survey area.
<p>Data acquired during the survey included: multibeam sonar bathymetry and acoustic backscatter; physical samples of seabed sediments, underwater photography and video of grab sample locations and oceanographic information including tidal data and sound velocity profiles. This dataset comprises O2 consumption and CO2 production rates measured from core incubation experiments conducted on seabed sediments.

Seabed sediments were collected with a Smith McIntyre grab. Two 5 cm diameter cores of surface sediment were extracted by pushing core barrels into these sediments. The cores were overlain by 0.153 L of filtered and uv-treated seawater were incubated in the dark for ~4-6 hours at ~25oC after a ~3 hour pre-incubation period. Dissolved oxygen levels were measured at ~30 minute intervals using the Presens technology. Samples for DIC analysis were taken at the start and finish of each incubation. Blank cores comprising filtered and uv-treated seawater only accompanied all incubations. Dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations (DIC) were determined using a DIC analyser and infrared-based CO2 detector (Geoscience Australia). CO2 production and O2 consumption rates were calculated by concentration differences (T=1 minus T=0) over the course of the incubation. Accuracy of O2 measurements was ± 0.1 mg L-1. The %RSDs of the precisions and accuracies of the dissolved inorganic carbon analyses both ranged from 0.3 to 0.4. The O2 consumption and CO2 production rates of the blank samples were -2.5 ± 2.1 and 0.8 ± 2.5 mmol m-2 d-1 respectively.
