Abstract
The Bureau of Mineral Resources made an experimental seismic survey in the Otway Basin, Victoria and SA, and in the Sydney Basin, NSW, from April to November 1965 and from mid February to mid March 1966. The survey used explosives as an energy source to obtain seismic reflection data for comparison with the results from an experimental 'Vibroseis' survey carried out for the Bureau by Seismograph Service Ltd during 1964.

The areas surveyed were areas of volcanic cover in southwest Victoria, Gambier Limestone and sand dune cover in southeast SA, and Hawkesbury Sandstone cover in NSW. They were considered to be seismic problem areas from the results of previous seismic work with difficulties caused by poor energy transmission, seismic noise, variable weathering conditions, difficult drilling, and in accessibility for seismic work. A program of preliminary tests to determine the physical conditions in the test areas, experimental recordings to study the various recording parameters, and production recording was made on traverses common to the 'Vibroseis' survey. The time spent on experimental recording and the amount of recording were approximately the same as for the 'Vibroseis' survey, and a full test program was made despite the fact that the results from the experimental 'Vibroseis' survey were available before the comparison survey began.
