Abstract
Regional airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data from the 2010 Frome AEM survey allow remapping or new interpretations of sedimentary basins associated with sandstone-hosted uranium deposits within the southern Frome Embayment, northern Flinders Ranges and Murray Basin. In the southern Frome Embayment, potential new palaeovalley systems have been recognised as conductivity anomalies interpreted to represent valley thalwegs over the top of the Benagerie Ridge south of the Lake Namba Palaeovalley. The regional Frome AEM survey data have also allowed remapping of the Curnamona, Billeroo and Yarramba palaeovalleys. A > 30 km long extension to the northern end of the Curnamona Palaeovalley is recognised and the southern extensions of the Yarramba Palaeovalley have been reinterpreted in greater detail than was previously possible. In the northern Flinders Ranges, the Frome AEM survey data have been used to develop a 3D model of the Cenozoic and Mesozoic geology around the MacDonnell Creek-Blanchewater area. Major fault systems interpreted within the AEM data are shown to offset the Marree Subgroup and Eyre Formation, which has generated a redox trap associated with a newly-discovered uranium deposit at Blanchewater. There is potential for this style of uranium trap to occur in other parts of the northern Flinders Ranges. In the Murray Basin, the Frome AEM survey data highlight a variety of sedimentary systems and structures under cover, including palaeovalley sediments in the Olary Creek downstream of Radium Hill and major range-bounding faults defining the Nackara Arc-Murray Basin boundary. The Frome AEM survey data are capable of defining architecture sedimentary basins (extent, depth and shape of palaeovalleys, major structures, and sand and shale facies) within the Frome Embayment area, while also providing sufficient along-line detail to make precise localised interpretations to improve uranium exploration models.
