Lineage
The Norfolk Island cadastre is a compilation of data sourced from the NCA, Kempsey Shire Council and the Department of Transport and Regional Services. The Kempsey Shire Council data were supplied as MapInfo files on 10 November 2000 and were converted to ESRI shapefiles by use of the Universal Translator of MapInfo. The NCA data were supplied in ArcInfo coverage format. These were then converted to ESRI shapefiles by use of the ArcView 'convert active theme to shapefile' command. Data from the DoTRS was supplied as a Microsoft Access Database file. Tables relating to land ownership were then extracted and saved as DBF files so they could be imported into ArcView. The Kempsey version of the Norfolk Island cadastre was chosen to be the 'base' as it was the most up-to-date cadastre. The main purpose of the data was for identification of Commonwealth land so the projection of the dataset was not important. Consequently the Kempsey cadastre was warped to match the NCA cadastre dataset with an ArcView software extension called Shapewarp. NCA data attributes were joined to the Kempsey data so that planning information can be identified or queried from the cadastre layer. The Crown land database obtained from DoTRS was then joined onto the cadastre DBF file. Upon the joining of tables, issues of portion number uniqueness, portion number existence and portion number validity were noted. These were inspected and adjusted where necessary on advice of David Kennedy (DoTRS).
