Abstract
These colour images are a digital hill-shaded relief pictoral representation of the 60 arc second bathymetric grid of the Australian region. The images represent a 60-arc second gridded compilation of several terrain data sets: 1) Satellite derived predicted bathymetry for sea floor topography distant from the Australian continental margin (dataset reference : SMITH, W. H. F. and SANDWELL, D. T. 1997. Global Seafloor Topography from Satellite Altimetry and Ship Depth Soundings, Science, 277,1956-1962.); 2) GTOPO30 land topography for other landmasses; 3) 9-arc second DEM over the Australian landmass; and 4) an interpolation of various ship-derived bathymetry data sets around the Australian continental margin, comprising mostly sparse ship track soundings and limited multibeam bathymetry coverage.

Lineage
These images are generated from datasets described in the Abstract into a hill-shaded relief of a 60-arc second gridded compilation using ERMAPPER. The ERMAPPER dataset was converted into an 8bit BIL image for use in Arcinfo/Arcview. More information on (1) the Satellite derived bathymetry dataset the major source of data used in this image. This worldwide Digital Elevation Model has a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds, approximately 1 kilometre and is stored as an ERMapper data file in /d/geo/store/data/topo/world_image. Overview and readme information can be obtained from that directory. Reference : SMITH, W. H. F. and SANDWELL, D. T. 1997. Global Seafloor Topography from Satellite Altimetry and Ship Depth Soundings, Science, 277, 1956-1962. More information on (2) the GTOPO30 dataset used in this image. GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. GTOPO30, completed in late 1996, was developed over a 3 year period through a collaborative effort led by staff at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC). The following organizations participated by contributing funding or source data: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United Nations Environment Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografica e Informatica (INEGI) of Mexico, the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) of Japan, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research of New Zealand, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).
