Abstract
Continental Australia has a comprehensive coverage of magnetic and gravity potential-field datasets after more than 60 years of mainly Commonwealth and State / Territory government acquisition of airborne total-field magnetic data and ground gravity data. Airborne magnetic data have been acquired in approximately 800 individual surveys with most surveys having line spacings of 400 m or better, terrain clearance of 100 m or less and positioning by GPS navigation. The line data of these surveys have been gridded with specifications optimal for the acquisition parameters and these grids have been seamlessly merged to provide a single coherent compilation of total magnetic intensity data with a cell resolution of 80 m. This compilation forms the basis of the Magnetic Anomaly Map of Australia, now in its 5th edition. Long-wavelength control for this merge has been provided by a continent-wide calibration survey acquired in 2007 as part of the recent Australian Government Onshore Energy Security Program. Gravity data have been acquired at more than 1.7 million stations across Australia to provide a complete regional coverage of the continent. Although the maximum spacing of sites is 11 km, some states and many smaller areas have much closer station spacings. The gravity data for the continent have been gridded with a cell resolution of 800 m, and this grid forms the basis of the Gravity Anomaly Map of Australia. Recently a derived Isostatic Residual Anomaly Map of Australia has also been released. Digital processing, enhancement and display of these datasets provide valuable insights into the structure and evolution of the Australian continent, particularly as much of the basement architecture is otherwise obscured by extensive Cenozoic cover sequences.
