Abstract
This collection consists of type specimens, illustrated or referred specimens which have been published in the scientific literature. Type specimens that have been published in literature of a wide variety of different macro and micro fossils. The Commonwealth Palaeontological Collection is a collection of type, illustrated referred or cited specimens of fossils which have been published in the scientific literature. This Collection was initiated by Federal Cabinet decision during the 1920s. When fossil specimens of any new species of animal or plant are found, for it to be of any future use in biostratigraphy, it of course must be analysed.

Lineage
A shambolic fossil metadata database contains information about the CPC number, a locality, a basic description of the fossil and possibly a photograph or two of the fossil. The database houses a loans system. This national collection is the biggest of its kind in Australia and is about three times the size of the next biggest collection. Instigated circa 1920.

Fossils have been collected through work performed by Geoscience Australia and people from other organisation. When a fossil is analysed and named, the work MUST be published for it to have any validity and precedence. For it to be published, the specimens used (the type specimens) MUST be registered in a valid collection and MUST be curated in perpetuity. It is these type specimens which act as the SOLE series of reference specimens for fossil species. The Commonwealth Palaeontological Collection (CPC) is such a collection. -180.0 180.0 -90.0 90.0
