Since the 1980's, cartographic geological maps have been compiled from hand-drawn field compiliation maps using CAD (eg, Microstation) or GIS (eg, ESRI) applications, with delivery in postscript, PDF or image (eg, JPG) formats. Digital copies of geological maps, particularly older maps, may also be generated by scanning paper map prints into image formats.
