Abstract
This isoseismal data shows the distribution of the shaking effects of earthquakes that were felt in Australia between 1841 and 2003. The data was captured from maps collated in the Geoscience Australia record "Atlas of Isoseismal Maps of Australian Earthquakes" compiled by K.F. McCue and supplimented with data from recent Centre for Earthquake Research Australia (CERA) reports and other unpublished data. Data present include felt values (points) and isoseismal contours (lines) from 405 earthquake events in an attributed GIS Dataset.

Lineage
Individual maps for each earthquake event created for the "Atlas of Isoseismal Maps of Australian Earthquakes" in JPG or DGN format were georeferenced using Australian topo-250k data in WGS84 decimal degrees, digitised and imported into arcinfo coverages. Additional felt values recorded by geographic coordinates were also added as point data from text files for some recent events not contained within this atlas. The coverages contain the isoseismal contours (arcs) and the felt values (points) expressed as intensities on the Modified Mercalli (MM) scale. The data was then smoothed, attributed with each eathquake event and built for line and point in ARCINFO. The individual maps were also converted to shapefiles and renamed by state, year and map reference number and denoted as "l' or "p' for line or point shapefiles. In one case the map reference number in the filename was truncated due to software limitations (file NT1987e53_14_2 is therefore named NT 1987e53_14). The individual coverages were also combined using the ARCINFO command APPEND into one coverage named as ISO. Due to the overlapping nature of the numerous points and lines, this final coverage has not been built and does not have correct topology. The resultant coverage was also converted into shapefile format (iso_l.shp and iso_p.shp). A line and a point shapefile has been generated for every mapped event however some events may have only had contours or only had points. In these cases, the shapefile still exists but will contain no data. In addition, where inset maps were generated, duplicate contours and felt values have been removed so that only one set of information exists for each event even though it may still be divided over several map reference numbers.
