Statement

Animation 1, showing a slip-thrust fault, a tsunami and the tsunami sensing systems that feed data to the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System, was derived from an existing static image, first created by Geoscience Australia in 2005. The original illustration appears in a 2005 brochure produced by the Australian Government to explain the functions of the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre.

Animation 2, showing a visualisation of the wave heights emanating from the 2004 tsunami event, was created by ANUGA in 2005.

Animation 3, showing how a tsunami can be generated in a subduction zone, through the sudden release of tension in the Earth's crust. This animation was originally approved as an upgrade to a previous animation that appeared in a film presented to PMSEIC in 2005, titled 'Tsunami: Does anybody have to die?'

Animations 4-6 are a minor update to three short animations originally produced as part of a series of eight. These animations explain how different tsunami waves are generated, propagated and inundate land.
