Beagle Marine Park bathymetry survey 2018 (GA0364)

This resource includes bathymetry data for Beagle Marine Park (Bass Strait) collected by Geoscience Australia (GA) and the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies (University of Tasmania; UTAS) during the period 17 - 26 June 2018 on the TV Bluefin. The survey was undertaken as a collaborative project funded through the National Environmental Science Program Marine Biodiversity Hub, with co-investment by GA and UTAS. The purpose of the project was to build baseline information for benthic habitats in the Beagle Marine Park that will support ongoing environmental monitoring within the South-east Marine Park Network as part of the 10-year management plan (2013-2023). Data acquisition for the project was completed during three separate voyages: Phase 1 - Seabed mapping by multibeam sonar; Phase 2 - Seabed imagery acquisition by Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, and sediment sampling; Phase 3 - Survey of demersal fish communities using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUVs). This dataset from Phase 1 comprises 11 bathymetry grids derived from multibeam sonar data gridded at 1 m spatial resolution, covering a combined area of 366 km2. While AusSeabed aims to publish data based on the requirements stated in the AusSeabed multibeam guidelines (version 1, https://australian-multibeam-guidelines.github.io), we will also publish interim products (version 0) that are currently available, but have not yet been standardised (version 1).

Users should be aware that V1 products will always supersede V0 products.

Processing methodology:

This dataset was produced using CARIS HIPS & SIPS and the AusSeabed-recommended processing methodology as follows.

1. A new Caris project was created in conjunction with existing or newly created vessel configuration file(s).

2. The raw swath sonar data files were imported to the project. GGK is the preferred navigation and ellipsoid height source.

3. The POSMV data files were imported to the project to bring in delayed heave, delayed heave RMS.

4. POS MV data were post-processed in POSPAC 8.3

5. Applied SBETS to data in CARIS (PPK Solution).

6. TPU and GPS tide were computed and all data were georeferenced (merged) to Ellipsoid datum.

7. A CUBE was generated as a reference surface for data cleaning.

8. An automated data cleaning using the surface cleaning method with the reference surface was undertaken.

9. Further processing and manual cleaning were conducted by Dr. Rob Beaman.

10. The final 11 grids were produced at an optimum resolution of 1m.

11. At Geoscience Australia, the received GeoTIFF was shifted to EGM2008 using AusCoastVDT and CARIS HIPS and SIPS.

12. The final processed grids were exported as a 32-bit floating point GeoTIFFs at 1m resolution, referenced to EGM2008.


Versions:

1. This dataset was first published in August 2019, as eleven 32 bit floating point GeoTIFFs at 1m resolution, referenced to ellipsoid.

2. This dataset was republished in June 2022 after further processing by Dr. Rob Beaman, as eleven 32 bit floating point GeoTIFF tiles, referenced to EGM2008.
