Abstract
The Australian Topographic map service is seamless national dataset coverage for the whole of Australia. The map portrays detailed graphic representation of features that appear on the Earth's surface. These features include cultural, hydrography and relief themes. SS, MS and LS refer to Small, Medium and Large Scale datasets.

Lineage
GEODATA TOPO Series 4 is the fourth generation of Geoscience Australia's topographic digital data and provides a seamless coverage of topographic data across Australia. The 1:250 000 scale topographic vector data product was initiated in the early 1990s by the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG), the predecessor of the National Geographic Information Group of Geoscience Australia. The programs objective was to capture for the first time a nationwide topographic digital data set at 1:250 000 scale, based principally on the conversion of existing published 1:250 000 maps to digital ArcInfo format. GEODATA TOPO-250K Version 1 contained a medium scale vector representation of the topographic features of Australia, and comprised 540 tiles, with three themes per tile. These themes protrayed Hydrography, Man Made Infrastructure and Habitation as well as Elevation Information. The national coverage was completed in 1994. Each generation of GEODATA released has improved the range, quality and quantity of the data through revision with satellite imagery and aerial photography, geographic research, information provided by authoritive sources as well as collaboration with other Federal and State government agencies and the industry. GEODATA Series 3 among other improvements merged all the tile information into single nation wide theme layers accessible via the web. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS: Utilising GEODATA series 3 as a base, over the last decade significant thematic targeted revision has been occurring. Emphasis has been placed on improving planimetric accuracy and currency.

GEODATA TOPO Series 4 is the fourth generation of Geoscience Australia's topographic digital data and provides a seamless coverage of topographic data across Australia. GEODATA TOPO Series 4 is derived from a single database holding a collection of vector representations of major topographic features captured at the best available scale and planametric accuracy. This database holds geospatial information captured at a minimum national quality level suitable for a scale representation of 1:250,000 but for specific themes and locations data may be captured at a quality level suitable for 1:25,000 or larger scale. 96.0 168.0 -48.0 0.0
