Petroleum Source Rock and Fluids Atlas Database - Onshore and Offshore

The Source Rock and Fluids Atlas delivery and publication services provide up-to-date information on petroleum (organic) geochemical and geological data from Geoscience Australia's Organic Geochemistry Database (ORGCHEM). The sample data provides the spatial distribution of petroleum source rocks and their derived fluids (natural gas and crude oil) from boreholes and field sites in onshore and offshore Australian basins. The services provide characterisation of source rocks through the visualisation of Pyrolysis, Organic Petrology (Maceral Groups, Maceral Reflectance) and Organoclast Maturity data. The services also provide molecular and isotopic characterisation of source rocks and petroleum through the visualisation of Bulk, Whole Oil GC, Gas, Compound-Specific Isotopic Analyses (CSIA) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) data tables. Interpretation of these data enables the characterisation of petroleum source rocks and identification of their derived petroleum fluids that comprise two key elements of petroleum systems analysis. The composition of petroleum determines whether or not it can be an economic commodity and if other processes (e.g. CO2 removal and sequestration; cryogenic liquefaction of LNG) are required for development.

Purpose

Analytical tools in the EFTF portal allow the visualisation of the distribution of Australia’s oil and gas accumulation and the extent of their source rocks on maps that are scalable from the well site to the basin context. Interrogation of the petroleum source rocks and the fluids data allows the identification of organic-rich intervals and occurrences of petroleum within a borehole. Further detailed analysis of programmed pyrolysis, organic petrology, isotopic and molecular (biomarker) data of the source rocks will determine their composition and potential to generate hydrocarbons. Bulk, molecular and isotopic analyses of the crude oil and natural gas samples enable these fluids to be typed into families and correlated to their source rock, enabling migration distances and the age and extent of the petroleum system to be determined.

These data sets are useful to government for evidence-based decision making on natural resources and to the petroleum industry for de-risking exploration programs.

Statement

The Petroleum Source Rock and Fluids Atlas is a product that utilises a subset of Geoscience Australia’s (GA) corporate Organic Geochemistry database ORGCHEM. The database initially comprised organic geochemical and petrological data on organic-rich sedimentary rocks, crude oils and natural gas from petroleum wells. Over time, other sample types (ground water, fluid inclusions, mineral veins, bitumen) from other borehole types (minerals, stratigraphic - including Integrated Ocean Drilling Program), marine dredge samples and field sites (outcrop, mines, surface seepage samples) have been analysed for their hydrocarbon content and are captured in the database.

The sample data originate from well completion and destructive analysis reports provided by the petroleum industry under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 and previous Petroleum (submerged Lands) Act 1967. The sample data are also sourced from

geological sampling programs in Australia by GA and its predecessor organisations Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) and Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR), and from the state and territory geological organisations. Other open file data from publications, university theses and books are also included. The analyses on these Australian samples have been undertaken by many laboratories including by GA’s own laboratories, service companies, petroleum companies and universities. The database captures data produced by a wide range of analytical techniques which are constantly evolving. For example, source rocks are evaluated for their bulk compositional characteristics by programmed pyrolysis, pyrolysis-gas chromatography and organic petrology. Natural gases are analysed for their molecular and isotopic content by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-temperature conversion-mass spectrometry (GC-TC-IRMS). Crude oils and the extracts of source rocks are analysed for their bulk properties (API gravity; elemental analysis) and their molecular (biomarkers) and isotopic (carbon and hydrogen) content by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), GC and GC-TC-IRMS.
