Abstract
Parametric dataset of earthquakes in the Australian region, with magnitudes greater than 2.5. Includes records of instrumentally recorded earthquakes and explosions, and earthquake parameters inferred from historic documents. Threshold magnitude of completeness varies spatially and temporally. Value: This data has historic value, and is used in assessment of earthquake hazard, risk and potential impacts from future events. Scope: A catalogue of known historical earthquakes in Australia and adjacent regions.

Lineage
Source: Created by Geoscience Australia (GA) (and predecessor) earthquake monitoring, detection, analysis and characterisation activities (instrumental monitoring), and from historic documents such as private journals and newspaper articles (pre-instrumental monitoring). Instrumental monitoring results are derived primarily from seismograph data from the Australian National Seismograph Network (ANSN) and Joint Urban Monitoring Program (JUMP) networks, and supplemented in some instances with data from state, commercial and private seismographs. This database does not include the seismograph data or seismograph station metadata.

Form: Database (International Federated Digital Seismograph Network (FDSN) standard format: QuakeML). Data are publicly discoverable and accessible from GA’s earthquakes website (https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au), and are downloadable .csv files.

This Collection record was created to enhance the discoverability and management of the individual products contained in the collection. See the individual eCat records for product specific lineage.
