Abstract

This web service displays the results of a marine survey conducted by Geoscience Australia in Commonwealth waters of the north-eastern Browse Basin (Caswell Sub-basin) between 9 October and 9 November 2014. The additional codes GA-0345 and GA-0346 refer to Geoscience Australia (GA) internal codes and TAN1411 is the vessel survey number given by the RV Tangaroa for 2014.

Lineage

Geoscience Australia conducted a marine survey (GA-0345 andGA-0346 /TAN1411) in Commonwealth waters of the north-eastern Browse Basin (Caswell Sub-basin) between 9 October and 9 November 2014. The purpose of the survey was to collect pre-competitive marine data to support a CO2 storage assessment in the Browse Basin, with particular emphasis on the integrity of seals overlying select CO2 storage plays. Data acquisition was undertaken as part of the National CO2 Infrastructure Plan (NCIP), administered by the Department of Industry and Science. The survey was conducted in 3 Legs aboard the New Zealand (NZ) research vessel RV Tangaroa, and included scientists and technical staff from GA, the NZ National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd. (NIWA) and Fugro Survey Pty Ltd. The data collected during this survey complement sequence stratigraphic studies in the Caswell Sub-basin that provide constraints on the most suitable areas for storage of CO2 and help to identify potential CO2 storage reservoirs. Geophysical data acquisition from shipboard multibeam (hull-mounted EM302), single beam (EA600 & ES60) and sub-bottom (TOPAS PS18) echo-sounders was undertaken during Leg 1 to map the study areas and to identify areas for seabed sampling and/or more detailed mapping and geophysical data acquisition during Leg 2 using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), and Leg 3 using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Following mapping with the EM302, higher-resolution multibeam data were acquired in targeted areas (prior to instrument failure) using a Kongsberg Simrad EM2000 system mounted to Fugro's Echo Surveyor V (ES-5) AUV. This instrument had a depth rating of 3000 m, and surveyed the seafloor according to a pre-programmed mission plan Shipboard data collected included multibeam sonar bathymetry and backscatter over 12 areas (A1, A2, A3, A4, A6b, A7, A8, B1, C1, C2b, F1, M1) totalling 455 km2 in water depths ranging from 90, 430 m, and 611 km of sub-bottom profile lines. An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) collected higher-resolution multibeam sonar bathymetry and backscatter data, totalling 30 km2. Eighteen Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) missions collected 31 hours of underwater video, four grabs and one core. The data collected during the survey are available for free download from the Geoscience Australia website. This dataset include all the bathymetry data collected during the survey.
