Abstract
The Bunbury 2008 LiDAR data was captured over the Bunbury region during February, 2008. The data was acquired by AAMHatch (now AAMGroup) and Fugro Spatial Solutions through a number of separate missions as part of the larger Swan Coast LiDAR Survey that covers the regions of Perth, Peel, Harvey, Bunbury and Busselton. The project was funded by Department of Water, WA for the purposes of coastal inundation modelling and a range of local and regional planning. The data are made available under licence for use by Commonwealth, State and Local Government. The data was captured with point density of 1 point per square metre and overall vertical accuracy has been confirmed at <15cm (68% confidence). The data are available as a number of products including mass point files (ASCII, LAS) and ESRI GRID files with 1m grid spacing. A 2m posting hydrologically enforced digital elevation model (HDEM) and inundation contours has also been derived for low lying coastal areas.

The data were acquired with fixed wing aircraft. GPS base station support was provided the the Perth GPS Network. Reduction of the LiDAR data to the Australian Height Datum proceeded without any significant problems. The laser strikes were classified into ground and non-ground points using automated processing. Manual checking and editing of the data classification further improved the quality of the terrain data. Ground strikes were further thinned to remove superfluous points not adding to the terrain definition. Non-ground strikes that were within 0.5m of the ground were filtered out. The 1m gridded DEM was produced from the thinned ground model. The 1m grid representing the non-ground was produced using the non-ground surface model of the points that were 0.5m above the ground. Gaps in the grids were interpolated. The Laser in use for this project is absorbed by water, so no water features or features below the water are picked up. This meant additional processing where the ground level was distorted due to nearby features, but water features were set a level based on the surrounding land.
